My sister in law just sent me this today. I don't remember seeing this article before, although it appears to be a few years old already. SUPERSTAR

I hadn't seen that interview either, so thanks for pointing it out.
The film by Todd Haynes is very interesting. Although I can see why Richard didn't like it and I don't know what Haynes was basing his script on, I think it comes across as a very plausible account of what could have taken place. Apart from anything else, the actress used for the voice of Karen was very close Karen's real voice.
The film has an almost horror movie feel to it.

The film has an almost horror movie feel to it. I am not sure I'm remembering this correctly, but there was a brilliant mix of two songs towards the end... I think it was Superstar and We've Only Just Begun. I may be wrong on the song selection as I haven't watched the piece in a long time. But I thought it was an excellent 'horror' blend.

The movie did have a macabre sense about it... that's one of the many things I like about it.

I also like the horror / macabre sense to the film. Like the bit where Karen and Richard are signing the record deal and someone from A&M (Herb Alpert?)) says to Karen, all she has to do is put herself in his hands or something similar.
Talk about chilling !
