This has turned up on Youtube. Very sad. I don't know what to say about it, really. Sigh.

It is so very sad because even in 1981 Karen is still in denial about her health. Although it could be that A&M Execs told her not to say anything about her health. Karen was more than just "pooped". Also seeing the additional takes makes us realize that even talk show television isn't always spontaneous. Overall I do like the interview. Thank you for sharing.

Someone on another forum mentioned this as being like an 'ambush' on Karen. I have to agreed with that. Although by the end they turn it around into a more positive conversation.

I was going to save it but I figured it would be around for a little while. I was wrong!

Depending on the browser, if you watched it, it may still be saved in your computer's cache folder, but the .flv file may delete itself quickly!

Looks like the carpenters publicity machine to me kinda sad how they deny facts we all know dispute the deception you can see a little of Karen's sense of humour coming out here Interesting interview

Thanks for the link, Stephen! I seem to remember seeing this before. I had forgotten how bad things had become. Even so, Karen and Richard still give a lovely interview... they were wonderful and did the best that they could. It's kind of a premonition of how stupid, crazy and insensitive the press would become in the years ahead... think of today's recording artists and the microscope that they are under. It's wrong, in my opinion. I can't begin to imagine the scrutiny that the Carpenters would be under if the press was as intrusive as they are today. 1981 was more than enough. Well, that's my soapbox...

I don't see it as an ambush at all, in fact I think that Sue Lawley (the interviewer) was just doing what any serious interviewer would do. Anyone in the public eye would have to expect such questions about their health and wellbeing when something is so obviously wrong. Celebrities can't expect to have such interviews on their terms to plug their albums etc. It is just so sad that Karen felt she couldn't talk about it and be honest. I hope Sue gave Karen a hug afterwards and said she wasn't being mean and was just trying to draw some attention to Karen's situation in the hope it might help.
