Fans of Carpenters love the music for the emotions the music evokes. Let's talk about some of the songs which have a special place in your heart and why. I'll start with one of mine... and there are several... but this is where I'll start. "Please Mr. Postman" holds a very special place in my heart. I was still 14 years old when I first heard the song in mid December 1974. I was sitting outside at school on the bleachers. I was in gym class and the coach was explaining something to us. As the coach was speaking I heard in the distance what I thought sounded like Karen Carpenter's voice. The sound grew louder and I saw a guy walking on the sidewalk with this huge boombox on his shoulder and out of it was blasting Please Mr. Postman, it sounded great Karen's voice singing and as the boombox boy walked away Tony Peluso's guitar played on into the afternoon sun (yep here in Southern California we have sunny days in December). That day after school I asked my mom if she would drive me to Sears so I could buy this record. She is such a great mom and she drove me there and I bought the record and I must have played it a dozen times that evening. It was just such a great song and ever since that day I have loved "Please Mr. Postman", I still have the single in my collection. For some reason that song really connects with me. Here's a scan of my original single:

I think for me, the song "It's Going To Take Some Time This Time" is special. It was one of the first songs by the Carpenters that I became familiar with (first CD purchase was "Singles 1969-1981), and it seems to be a recurring theme for me whenever I am facing difficulties. It's just so comforting to me. It reminds me that mistakes aren't the end of the world.

Aww, "And When he Smiles" reminds me of the boy with the cutest smile I have ever seen a guy that means a lot to me and that will always have a very special place in my heart. I can't help thinking of him every time I listen to that song cause he IS just about the happiest boy that I ever knew

Honestly, I have a hard time choosing a "favorite" because so many of them have a special meaning in my heart. But having said that, I think "Let Me Be The One" has been a song that comforts me when I'm lonely or feeling depressed. When Karen sings "For love and understanding....to find a qiet place...for silent understanding...a loving touch, come to me when things go wrong, and there's no love to light the way.", I feel connected with her in a way I can't ever describe. Many years ago, my mother died(at age 45) in 1979 and I was despondent...drinking heavily and crying, debating whether to end my own life. I was playing this album with a razor at my wrist, but when this song played, I just broke down crying and knew Karen understood. Not an easy story to share here, but it is what it is. Karen has comforted me ever since with her voice.

Another Carpenters song that reaches into me is "Only Yesterday"... this is perfection in a pop song!

I love so many of the songs, it really is hard to pick a favorite. But to narrow it down, or ones I couldn't live without, lol....for sure "Only Yesterday", "Yesterday Once More", and "Won't Last A Day Without you". All these were played a lot on the radio, at a time there was much turmoil in my life...and they brought me great comfort and a connection to last a lifetime.

Rick, I loved your memory of first hearing "Mr. Postman". I can just imagine you wanting to get the record so badly, that you had to have it that very day! So funny! And your mom was sweet to be so accommodating. When it comes to favorite songs, that is a very hard question to answer, because there are so many to choose from, and it would vary for me based on my mood or what was happening in my life at the time. I'll just pick one for now, and it isn't necessarily my all-time favorite, but it is one that I never tire of hearing. That song is "Tryin' to get the feeling again." It is a gem. Karen seems to be telling her story with emotion that builds with intensity against the backdrop of Richard's wonderful orchestration; wonderful strings, guitar playing, and melding of voice and music. Midway you can even hear her turn the page of her lyric sheet...this was a one-take lead track that Karen did so well with many of her songs. She was so marvelously talented that way.

Irene... "Tryin' To Get The Feeling Again" is an awesome song... it is easily one of my ultimate favorites. I can listen to that song several times over. I especially love the "Bloodhound" lyric. Oh, YES! "...like a bloodhound, searching for a long lost friend"... that's one of those lines that I didn't appreciate before until you just pointed it out! LOL
Rick, you probably know this, but was it only released as a single in Europe? I have a 45 of it which was produced in the UK. I know it was included in the Carpenters "Interpretations" CD that was issued, but don't think a single was released here.
