For some reason I've come to believe that The Carpenters' recording of "The Rainbow Connection" was just a work lead that Karen sang once or twice and then they scrapped it. I also seem to recall that Karen didn't like the recording at all. Does anyone remember anything about the details and circumstances of this song? I love it so much.

Hi Mask, Karen did a great job with this song. I have enjoyed from the first time I heard it. you're right in that the song was a work lead. It was recorded in 1980/81 during the Made In America sessions but obviously it did not make it on the album. The song was released as a single in Japan in 2001 (with the release of As Time Goes By) and it reached #47 on the Japanese singles chart.

Japanese people have got great taste. It's one of the sweetiest Carpenters songs I've heard out there. I love the beginning very much! And Karen sings it perfectly, in my opinion, even If it was only a few takes to be recorded!

I gotta wonder if someone has mixed the two together to make a duet..... I heard Kermits version first (waaayyyy back), so for me it was odd hearing Karen covering the Muppets. And, I agee, it could sound a lot better, but it's kinda charming now that I have heard it a lot

I think the best way I can put this is, this song has a fairy tale princess type feel to it. Anyone that knew Karen, knew that Karen would rather be out making mud pies than doing 'princess' type stuff. I like the song too. Written by Paul Williams and a couple other writers. Karen did her best with it but it was kind of a children's song when Karen was wanting to do other stuff. Even though her heart was not really into the song, I feel Karen did an excellent job with it. Paul and Karen are both very down to earth people so they always worked well together. I actually saw Paul and Karen do a sound test together on an upright piano that was "a little out of tune" as Paul stated. I think it was either the high E or high F above middle C that was out of tune on the old upright. I think it was either October or November 1978 when I met Paul Williams and found out who Karen was during their meeting which I played 'lookout' because it was during school hours and oddly, I think only Karen, Paul and I knew that Paul was at the school that day. I remember that day well (except for the exact date because I never wrote the date down) because at the end of the day after Paul was there then left, Karen and I had our 'heart to heart' talk with each other after everyone else left the school.
